Job Description
The Dental Hygienist plays a vital role in supporting the mission, vision, and values of Morris Heights Health Center (MHHC), actively promoting a culture of excellence and compassionate care. This position outlines the primary responsibilities associated with the practice of dental hygiene in accordance with New York State Education Law—either under the supervision of a licensed dentist or through an approved collaborative arrangement.
Position Summary:
The Dental Hygienist is a key member of the dental care team, working collaboratively to assess, prevent, and treat oral health conditions. Responsibilities include conducting oral/maxillofacial assessments to assist in diagnosis and treatment planning, delivering dental hygiene services, supporting public health initiatives through the School-Based Health Program, and providing patient education and outreach.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide dental hygiene services under the general supervision of a licensed dentist or pursuant to a collaborative agreement, per NY State Education Law.
Perform dental cleanings, including removal of calculus, plaque, and stains, and root planing where necessary.
Apply topical agents such as fluoride, desensitizing agents, and topical anesthetics as indicated.
Apply pit and fissure sealants to prevent dental decay.
Conduct dental and periodontal assessments (e.g., periodontal charting) to support diagnosis by the dentist.
Take and interpret dental radiographs.
Set up and break down exam rooms; clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments following MHHC protocols.
Record and assess medical histories, including vital signs, as part of diagnostic preparation.
Deliver oral health education and counseling to patients to support preventive care.
Maintain accurate, up-to-date dental records in compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
Educate and advise patients on maintaining oral hygiene and overall health.
Collaborate with the Dental Director on matters concerning the center’s dental services.
Attend departmental and organization-wide meetings as required.
Collaborate with other departments and specialties to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
Support and participate in outreach and educational programs, including school screenings under the School-Based Health Program.
Help resolve patient concerns and support quality patient experiences.
Represent the dental department in interdepartmental meetings and assigned committees.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental performance improvement activities.
Adhere to all safety and infection control policies, including those from MHHC, OSHA, NYS, NYC, and Joint Commission (JC) regulations.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Must be licensed as a Dental Hygienist in New York State.
Demonstrated proficiency in all areas of dental hygiene practice.
Commitment to patient-centered care and public health.
Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Experience in a community health or school-based setting is a plus.
