
Dental Hygienist
Job Description
As a Pediatric Dental Hygienist, you play a crucial role in promoting the oral health and overall well-being of children, adolescents, and young adults. This position requires a compassionate, patient-centered approach and strong clinical skills to help young patients feel comfortable, safe, and educated about proper dental care.

Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care & Clinical Duties
Prepare treatment rooms and patients for hygiene procedures by following established protocols
Greet and comfort patients, ensuring a positive and welcoming experience
Perform thorough dental cleanings, including removing plaque, calculus, and stains from above and below the gum line
Conduct oral cancer screenings and periodontal assessments
Take and develop dental X-rays as needed
Apply preventive treatments, such as fluoride and sealants
Assist in the recognition of oral conditions that may indicate abuse or neglect and report accordingly
Fabricate temporary restorations and clean/polish removable appliances
Provide anesthesia support, including the administration of nitrous oxide and local anesthetics (as permitted by state law)
Education & Communication
Educate children and parents/guardians on proper brushing, flossing, and nutritional habits
Provide post-treatment care instructions and schedule follow-up visits
Answer questions and address concerns in a clear, age-appropriate manner
Practice Support & Safety
Maintain dental instruments by cleaning, sharpening, and sterilizing
Ensure infection control and safety protocols are strictly followed
Perform routine equipment checks and minor troubleshooting as needed
Monitor and manage hygiene supply inventory
Maintain accurate and thorough patient records, including vital signs and medical/dental history
Participate in team meetings and continuing education opportunities
Emergency Preparedness
Maintain CPR certification and support the dental team in managing emergencies
Keep emergency drugs, oxygen, and contact numbers up to date and accessible
Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited Dental Hygiene program
Active state license to practice dental hygiene
CPR/BLS certification
Pediatric experience preferred (but not required)
Comfort with administering nitrous oxide and local anesthetics (per state guidelines)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children
Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a busy environment
